Why I started Well K9 — and how Butters forced my hand.

Let me paint you a picture. It is 7:14 AM. I have not had coffee. And there is a 10-year-old pug on my mattress who has decided that the most important thing happening on planet Earth right now is breakfast. Every single jump lands like I am personally experiencing a seismic event. The tectonic plates are shifting. Scientists would be concerned. I am questioning my entire life, my choices, my house, everything. And Butters? Butters does not care. His internal timer is impeccable and he absolutely, one hundred percent knows it.

That's Butters. My 10-year-old pug, going on 11 in a couple months. My shadow, my alarm clock, my chief wellness consultant. The entire reason you're reading this.

If your dog were your kid, would you feed them the same thing every day without reading the label? Didn't think so.

Your dog is your kid. That's not cringe. That's just the honest truth for Millennials and Gen X'ers who chose dogs before (or instead of) kids, and who understand these animals give us everything and deserve the same energy back. And Gen Z? You're next. You think you're going to scroll past a dog in a sweater at the adoption fair and walk away unchanged? You will not. Nobody does. Welcome. It's warm in here and we have supplements.

What nobody tells you at the dog park

The real stuff about senior dog health

Pugs are incredible. They are also, and I say this with love, walking health paperwork. Here's what changed everything for me:

🫁
Brachycephalic Syndrome
Flat-faced breeds overheat faster and need airway support as they age. Not just cute snoring.
🧠
Cognitive Decline
Canine dementia is real. Lion's Mane mushroom extract is one of the most promising natural supports right now.
🦴
Joint Inflammation
Senior dogs carry chronic inflammation that compounds over time. Diet changes can slow this meaningfully.
🛡️
Immune Support
After age 7, immune function declines. Turkey Tail, Reishi, and 5 Defenders are genuinely changing the game.

I started changing everything: Butters' diet, his supplements, the way I track his energy, his coat, his digestion. He is almost 11. He acts like he is 4. I have receipts.

The star of the show
A Day in the Life of Butters (aka The Flip Book)
Freshly illustrated. One post-it at a time.
7:14 AM
Butters has been awake for 45 minutes and has chosen chaos. He is lapping the living room at a clip that should not be possible for an animal his age. He is not running from anything. He is not running toward anything. He is running for the sake of running, which is more philosophically advanced than most of us. He is 10. He has no context for "rest."
10:22 AM
Post-breakfast zoomies. Yes. Zoomies. At 10. He hit the corner of the couch at full speed, did a full 360, and then, with absolutely zero warning, unleashed something that can only be described as biological propellant. His nitro button, apparently. He cut the corner like he was in the final lap at Daytona and took off again. I died. I came back to life. I wrote it on a post-it.
2:41 PM
He is asleep on my keyboard. Not beside it. On it. He has sent four emails. The deals he has made on my behalf are between him and God.
7:30 PM
Walk time. He sprinted the first block. Stopped to smell something for four full minutes. Looked at me like I was rushing him. He then sprinted again. He is running the show. He has always been running the show. I have made peace with it.
10:15 PM
New post-it on the board. A little pug snout, a pawprint, a note that says "still drawing." That's all you need.

Why this exists

Well K9 is your flip book too

It doesn't matter how many pages you've already drawn. What matters is picking up the pencil today. Your dog is not too old to benefit from better nutrition. You are not too late to change the story.

It's never too late to draw a new page. For your pug, your lab, your mutt, your best friend.

Every issue covers functional mushrooms, raw nutrition, integrative vet care, and the full picture of whole-dog wellness — the habits, routines, products, and science behind why your choices actually matter. Told the way a friend who's been down this rabbit hole would tell it. With honesty, some humor, and at least one Butters story per issue.

Welcome to the flip book.

New pages every issue. New chapters for your dog. And one very chaotic, very healthy pug who is living proof it is absolutely worth it.

With love, treats, and functional mushrooms —
